New facitilities were required to support the new Bachelor of Physical and Health Education. According to Nipissing University, the facility “combines research, teaching and physical activity to support a holistic approach to learning and healthy living” and represents an “investment for studying and teaching human movement science, and for knowledge creation relevant to the societal, health and business challenges facing communities.”
Conceived as three phases in response to funding challenges, the first phase provided:
- Double gymnasium (110’x157’), with nearly 40’ vertical clearance and natural light;
- Large video display wall;
- Concourse/Lobby crush space for events;
- Retractable bleachers to seat 1,150 spectators;
- Fitness Studio and Cardio Room overlooking the new gymnasium;
- Significant gym storage;
- Living Green Wall – with recirculated bio-filtration of indoor air;
- Varsity Change Rooms.
The second phase now known as the “Nipissing University Active Learning and Health Research Innovation Centre”, opened in September 2013. It created classrooms, laboratories (including a barometric chamber) and faculty space. Phase three, provided expanded change rooms, a new squash court and administration space.
Throughout all of the projects that Nipissing has had the pleasure of undertaking with them, Paul Mitchell has proven to be an extremely valuable resource. He has regularly displayed a sincere desire to understand the university’s requirements and ensure that the various
perspectives and needs from all participants are addressed. His abilities in managing and moderating consultation sessions have been invaluable on several occasions.
