As a gateway to the City of North Bay, this air passenger terminal welcomes visitors with a sense of the northern Ontario landscape. The new modernized facility replaced the existing terminal of the airport, which is owned and operated by the City of North Bay, to serve the city’s current and future needs. The space was designed with a restrained palette of concrete, wood and stone and is intended to be rugged and inspiring.
The knowledge of air traffic ground mobility, baggage and pedestrian traffic flows, security concerns, vehicular traffic and safety were primary in the minds of the multiple user groups and a valuable resource to the Architects. Their knowledge of current and future needs was integrated into the design. A large main concourse allows for waiting, greeting, pick-ups and mingling, and functions as the heart of accommodating both large and small flows. Efficient parking and drop-off areas were also necessary for safe day and nighttime functions of the airport. The successful marriage of functionality and a robust aesthetic design produces a landmark in the minds of visitors and residents of our city alike.
Municipally-owned YYB North Bay Jack Garland Airport is the largest airport north of Toronto.
