Island Cottage Addition

Located on a private island in Lake Nipissing, this family retreat has been loved as a summer getaway for decades.  However, as the owner’s children grew, the need for additional living space and a bit more privacy also grew.

Hoping to achieve a new modern living area – in both amenity and style – while also maintaining the charm of the existing cottage, the owners approached our firm for help.  To address this challenge, the proposed design of the addition replicates the size and shape of the existing cottage (although rotated), while contrasting the existing cottage in colour and style.  As a result, the new addition integrates seamlessly with the existing cottage, while also being strikingly unique.  It creates a dialogue between black and white, modern and traditional, new and existing.
